Buying a Used Car Warranty

When you’re looking to buy a used car warranty, make a plan, then do your research. If you own a used car and need coverage, there are specific potholes to avoid. Know how to get the right plan and a good deal. This article spells it out so you can find the coverage that’s right for you.

Buying a Used Car Warranty

Buying a Used Car Warranty

It’s always a good idea to develop a plan of attack when going into any large purchase, especially when buying a used car warranty.

Although cars have become more reliable, 89% of cars on the road are in need of at least one repair. The longer a car is on the road, the higher the chance that something will go wrong. The higher the chance something will go wrong, the more likely you are to need coverage to handle the expense.

That’s why you could use a good plan.

Identifying Your Needs

First, figure out what your car needs. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What make, model, and year is my used car? Is this a type of car that typically needs a lot of repairs?
  • On average, how much do those repairs cost?
  • How many miles are on my car?
  • How much longer do I plan to keep my car?
  • Has my car had any accidents that may affect its reliability?

That last item is especially important in determining how reliable your car is. If the details are sketchy—i.e., some car history checks don’t capture all accidentsyou may run into unexpected and costly repair bills down the road.

Warranty Purchase Dos and Don’ts

Once you understand what your car needs, get to know the industry and the vehicle coverage plans you might choose. Here are a few things you should know about used car warranties:

  • An extended warranty acts as protection against future repairs.
  • Auto dealers as well as manufacturers sell warranties (more expensive, on average).
  • Third-party companies also sell used car warranties (less expensive, on average).
  • Consider provider history. A company with some years under its belt if often a much better bet than a green one.

Car & Driver offers this comprehensive list of things to know before buying a used car warranty:

  1. Do not buy a warranty strictly on a phone pitch.
  2. Review the actual contract before you decide.
  3. Be wary of “today only” offers.
  4. Find out which “insurer” or “underwriter” covers to your plan and check their bonafides at ambest.com.
  5. Know your deductible. Make sure it’s charged only once per repair.
  6. Buy from a company that pays directly for repairs, not one that reimburses you after the fact.
  7. Double-check that your warranty is transferable (in the event that you sell the car) and that you know the transfer fee.
  8. Remember that if you don’t choose to transfer the warranty to someone else when you sell your car, you’re likely due a refund for the unused portion of the warranty.
