Ford Warranty at a Glance

Every new vehicle from Ford comes with a comprehensive factory warranty that covers certain repair costs for an initial period. But this coverage doesn’t include everything that could go wrong with your Ford. Also, factory coverage is limited to a specific number of years or miles after your purchase. What do you do when your basic Ford warranty expires?

Keep reading for an overview of Ford’s factory warranty and how to get full, lasting protection for your Ford vehicle at the best price through extended warranty coverage from CARCHEX.

What Does Your Ford Warranty Cover?

When you purchase a new or certified pre-owned Ford from the dealership, it comes with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty. For a breakdown of exactly what you’re getting in this warranty, here is an overview of Ford’s factory coverage:

Ford Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage: 3 Years / 36,000 Miles

The basic Ford bumper-to-bumper warranty only lasts three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is the most comprehensive warranty that Ford offers and excludes only a short list of components—hence the name “bumper-to-bumper.” If problems arise early in your car’s life due to faulty materials or workmanship, they’re covered by the dealership.

What Is Ford’s Powertrain Warranty Coverage?

If your vehicle is covered by a Ford powertrain warranty, it’s important to know that this warranty plan is much more limited than bumper-to-bumper coverage. Though it lasts for five years or 60,000 miles, the Ford powertrain warranty only covers the parts of the car that mechanically drive it forward (a.k.a., your car’s powertrain).

Ford powertrain warranties cover:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Transfer case
  • Drive shafts
  • Axles
  • Differentials
  • Front-wheel drive
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • All-wheel drive

Safety Restraint System Coverage

Under the factory warranty, your Ford vehicle’s airbag Supplemental Restraint System, or SRS, and safety belts are covered for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Corrosion Warranty

Ford warranty corrosion coverage includes perforation only and lasts five years or unlimited miles. It applies to your car’s body sheet metal panels or aluminum body panels. This means that if parts of your car are damaged by rust within the first five years, you don’t have to pay for the repairs.

Power Stroke Diesel Engine

The Ford Power Stroke Diesel Engine is a special type of engine for Ford trucks. The coverage period for your Power Stroke Diesel Engine is five years or 100,000 miles. This warranty includes the vehicle’s direct injection diesel engine and certain engine components, such as the cylinder block, timing gear, valve covers, water pump, high pressure lines, gaskets and seals, and more.

Roadside Assistance

Ford’s warranty include complimentary coverage through the Ford Roadside Assistance Program for five years or 60,000 miles. This service includes:

  • Flat tire change if you have a spare available
  • Towing to the nearest Ford Motor Co. dealership or your selling dealership if within 35 miles
  • Lock-out assistance
  • 12V battery jump starts
  • Fuel delivery
  • Winch out services if your vehicle is within 100 feet of the road

Emissions Warranty

In compliance with Federal law, Ford provides coverage for the emissions control systems and parts. Terms can vary, as described below:

  • Passenger cars and light duty trucks—2 years or 24,000 miles
  • Heavy duty vehicles—5 years or 50,000 miles
  • Certain emissions parts—8 years or 80,000 miles

If you live in state that follows California Air Resources Board regulations, your emissions warranty coverage is as follows:

  • Vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs. or less—3 years or 50,000 miles (short-term warranty), or 7 years or 70,000 miles (long-term warranty)
  • Vehicles with GVWR of over 14,000 lbs—5 years or 50,000 miles
  • Emissions Performance Warranty—3 years or 50,000 miles

Unlike many other manufacturer warranties, the Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty also covers defective tires up to 36,000 miles. How much you pay to replace your tires is determined by how many miles you’ve driven:

  • 1-12,000 miles—Ford covers 100% of the parts
  • 12,001-24,000 miles—Ford covers 60% of the parts
  • 21,001-36,000—Ford covers 30% of the parts

Additional Coverage

Ford throws in a few extra warranties for select items normally considered wear and tear:

  • Wiper blades—6 months
  • Wheel alignments—12 months or 12,000 miles
  • Tire balancing—12 months or 12,000 miles
  • Brake pad/lining replacement—12 months or 18,000 miles

What Isn’t Covered by Your Ford Warranty?

What many people forget is that Ford’s factory warranty is not all-inclusive. There are certain situations or types of damage or parts that are left out.

Consider some of the repairs your Ford warranty doesn’t cover:

  • Objects striking the vehicle
  • Water damage
  • Spills, dents, and scratches
  • Wear and tear
  • Windshield scratches (after 12 months or 12,000 miles)
  • Oil changes
  • Air filters
  • Tire rotation or inflation
  • Wiper blades
  • Wheel alignment and balancing
  • Brake pads

For Ford manufacturer warranties in general, it’s important to know that your warranty doesn’t cover every kind of damage. They cover manufacturing defects caused by factory workmanship or factory-supplied materials. This means that damage caused by the following isn’t covered in your auto warranty:

  • Accidents
  • Theft or vandalism
  • Fire
  • Alterations to the vehicle
  • Misuse to the vehicle
  • Environmental factors, such as hail or tree sap
  • Contaminated or improper fluid
  • Driving through deep water
  • Racing

For your repair to be covered, you must demonstrate that you’ve kept up with proper care and maintenance for your Ford. You may want to keep your receipts or documents that show when you brought your car into the dealership or auto shop and what work was done.

Ford Extended Warranty: Do I Need It?

Once your Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires, you can purchase an extended warranty if you’d like continued protection for your vehicle. Let’s look a little more closely at your options:

  1. Buy a Ford extended warranty from the dealership, called a Ford Protect Extended Service Plan (ESP),  for continued coverage.
  2. Purchase extended coverage from a third-party company like CARCHEX.
  3. Don’t purchase an extended warranty and pay for any future repairs out of pocket.

How do you know if purchasing Ford extended warranty coverage is the right decision? Ask yourself these five questions to determine if extended warranty protection for your Ford vehicle makes sense for you:

  1. Do I want flexible service options?
    • Third-party warranty providers usually offer more flexibility in servicing your car than factory warranties, allowing you to visit thousands of licensed auto mechanics. With a Ford warranty from the manufacturer, you are only permitted to have your vehicle serviced at authorized Ford dealerships. If one of their locations isn’t nearby, it could be a big inconvenience whenever repairs do come up.
  2. How long will I be driving this car?
    • Ford’s standard warranty only lasts for the first few years after you buy your vehicle. If you intend to drive your Ford for many years to come, you will be on the hook for any repairs after your manufacturer’s warranty expires. An extended warranty from CARCHEX protects you for five to 10 more years.
  3. Do I care about resale value?
    • Many Ford extended warranties are transferable from one owner to the next. If you’re looking to sell your Ford in the future, having an extended warranty can increase its resale value—putting money back in your pocket.
  4. Can I afford to pay for repairs out of pocket?
    • If you put off getting your car fixed to avoid the payment or don’t have a plan for how you would afford a surprise repair, purchasing an extended warranty may help. Knowing that you have a way to offset repairs costs can put your mind at ease. If your extended warranty is from CARCHEX, you can make payments in monthly installments with no interest or fees.
  5. Do I want the additional services?
    • Many extended warranties include benefits like rental cars, roadside assistance, gas delivery, trip interruptions services, and more. That way, if your car breaks down on the side of the road, you can get the help you need without breaking the bank.
Can You Afford To Pay These Repair Costs?

Common Ford Problems and What They Cost

We’ve mentioned that without Ford extended warranty coverage, you are responsible for paying for repair and maintenance yourself. Let’s take a look at five of the most popular Ford models (according to U.S. News & World Report) and consider the cost of some of their most common issues.

  1. Your Ford F-150 may eventually have issues with its spark plugs. A spark plug replacement costs anywhere from $78 to $1,130.
  2. Many Ford Mustangs eventually need a head gasket replacement. This costs anywhere from $982 to $3,593.
  3. Your Ford Focus may run into issues with its clutch after around 5 years on the road. Clutch repairs cost from $897 to $1,615.
  4. Many Ford Edge owners have to replace the brake booster. This fix can cost between $509 and $587.
  5. Ford Fusion vehicles may need an ignition switch replacement, costing owners anywhere from $140.83 to $310.14.

Do some of these numbers look out of reach? Make sure you are willing to pay these costs out of pocket if you decide to drive your Ford without an extended warranty.
