What to Know About Your Mitsubishi Warranty

When you purchase a new Mitsubishi, you want to keep it working its best for years to come. Through a factory warranty, the dealership provides coverage for repairs and replacements for a few years, but what happens when it expires?

Mitsubishi Factory Warranty

A factory warranty comes with new Mitsubishi vehicles. Starting the day you purchase the vehicle, the basic warranty lasts for five years or 60,000 miles for most models—whichever comes first.

The Mitsubishi warranty includes the following for 2018 models and more:

  • 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty—This Mitsubishi bumper-to-bumper warranty provides basic coverage for parts provided by Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) that are defective in material or workmanship. It covers most systems and parts of your vehicle, with a short list of exceptions.
  • 10-year/100,00-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty—This warranty covers repairs or replacements of powertrain parts and related components, including the engine, transaxle/transmission, and transfer case, as well as the axle housing, gaskets, and seals. The Mitsubishi powertrain warranty is only partially transferable to subsequent owners.
  • 5-year/unlimited-mile Roadside Assistance—Jump starts, flat tire services, gas delivery, lockout assistance, and towing are covered under this 24/7 roadside assistance plan.
  • 5-year/60,000-mile Restraint System Warranty—Seat belts and related components are covered under this warranty. If you live in Kansas, the mileage coverage is unlimited.
  • 7-year/100,00-mile Anti-Corrosion/Perforation Warranty—If rust or other perforation causes corrosion under normal use, the Mitsubishi dealership will repair or replace the body sheet metal at no charge.

What Else Does the Mitsubishi Factory Warranty Cover?

In addition to the key parts of the warranties listed above, there are a few things that new Mitsubishi vehicle owners should note:

  • The Emission Control System Warranty ranges between 2 years/24,000 miles and 8 years/80,000 miles, depending on the component.
  • The battery also has a 2-year/unlimited-mile warranty for defective equipment. If it fails in its third year, the car owner pays 50% of the repair cost.
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, Lancer Evolution, i-MiEV, and Raider warranties aren’t the same, so make sure to check your specific service contract if you’re the owner of one of these models.
  • Air conditioner refrigerant is covered for 1 year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. After that, it’s only included if it’s part of a covered repair.
  • Audio units, navigation systems, CD changers, audio units, DVD video players, and all filament bulbs are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
  • Tires aren’t included in this warranty. Instead, the tire manufacturers carry their own warranties.

What’s Not Covered by the Mitsubishi Factory Warranty?

While the list of what’s covered under the Mitsubishi warranty may seem comprehensive, there are situations that don’t fall under your warranty—or may even void it.

For example, you must follow the maintenance plan outlined in your owner’s manual, or else the dealership could claim improper maintenance or misuse of vehicle. That’s why it’s smart to keep receipts and records of all maintenance, repairs, or other work done on your car.

Other events that aren’t covered under Mitsubishi warranties include:

  • Collisions or accidents
  • Theft or vandalism
  • Misuse of vehicle, such as driving over curbs, racing, or overloading
  • Modifications or alterations to your vehicle
  • Disconnecting or changing the odometer
  • Damage from the environment, including tree sap, sand, salt, hail, flooding, or sand
  • Improper maintenance
  • Damage caused by customer-applied chemicals, such as polishes or sealants

Is the Mitsubishi Warranty Transferable?

Most of the new Mitsubishi warranty is transferable. The exception is the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. For subsequent owners, the Mitsubishi powertrain warranty is five years or 60,000 miles instead. Even so, that’s not a bad deal. That warranty period is what some new car owners have to begin with, depending on the manufacturer (see our warranty comparison below).

Why is the ability to transfer a warranty so important? Let’s say you decide to sell your Mitsubishi before the factory warranty expires. Having that protection plan can increase the resale value of your vehicle.

Comparing the Mitsubishi Warranty

With the Mitsubishi powertrain warranty lasting up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, this coverage is some of the best when compared to other manufacturers’ warranties. See the chart below to what you can expect from other brands.

Owner’s Responsibility: How to Take Care of Your Mitsubishi

Maintaining your vehicle isn’t only important so that you can take advantage of the Mitsubishi warranty, but it’s the best way to keep your car running for years to come. Read our tips on how to look after your vehicle.

  • Wash your car regularly to help prevent rust and other corrosion to the body sheet metal panels. When washing, use lukewarm or cold water, and promptly rinse the cleanser so that it doesn’t dry on the paint. This is an especially important practice to keep if the paint surfaces have salt, tree sap, bird dropping, or ice melting agents on them. Not to mention, keeping your car clean makes it more enjoyable to use.
  • Don’t fall behind on regular maintenance. Staying on top of oil changes, tire rotations, tire replacements, and inspections is a great way to easily avoid repairs. Ignoring these steps can lead to serious damage to your car systems.
  • Follow the maintenance guide in your owner’s manual. When you buy a car, it comes with instructions on how to best care for your specific vehicle. Read the owner’s manual and go by what’s listed. Also, keep track of your receipts or records in case other repairs come up or you decide to sell the car.
  • Deal with recalls quickly. If your vehicle has a recall, go to the dealership to have it taken care of quickly to protect you, your passengers, and your car. Repairs for recalls are usually completed free of charge. If you’re not sure if your specific car is included in a recall, check online.
  • Get to know your mechanic. Having an expert on hand when something comes up is never a bad thing. Also, having a consistent repairman allows them to become familiar with your car, as well as your personal preferences.
  • Use the right type of fuel. Most cars can get away with the least expensive gas available, but check your owner’s manual to see if you should be using premium instead.
  • Purchase a Mitsubishi extended warranty. Once your factory warranty expires, it’s up to you to pay for all repairs and replacements. Putting off these fixes can make the problem worse—and more expensive. An extended warranty can prepare you financially and make affording repairs or replacements easier on your wallet.

Cost to Repair a Mitsubishi

According to Your Mechanic, the average annual repair cost for a Mitsubishi is $236. While this amount is fairly low, that number isn’t a guarantee. If an expensive repair surprises you, are you able to afford it without the help of a Mitsubishi warranty?

Consider these common repairs needed by Mitsubishi models:

Model Repair/Replacement Cost
2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Heater core replacement $61–$1,118
Mitsubishi Lancer Alternator repair $212–$566
2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Brake pads wear out quickly Average of $150 per axle
Mitsubishi Eclipse AC evaporator replacement $417–$959

Your Options for Mitsubishi Extended Warranties

It’s likely that Mitsubishi dealership will try and sell you a vehicle service contract when your factory warranty expires, if not sooner. But that’s not your only option, or even your best option.

Third-party warranties offered outside of the dealership, such as those from CARCHEX, can offer more flexibility and affordability than those provided by the dealership. For example, many dealerships require that you only get your repairs done at their approved facilities. If those locations aren’t nearby, or if you don’t prefer their service, this can be a real inconvenience.

What’s more, the cost of your Mitsubishi extended warranty may be wrapped into your vehicle’s finance plan. That means you’re paying interest on an extended warranty, which is certainly not the cheapest option.

The good news is that you can choose a third-party warranty company. Compare these brands below, and read on to see why CARCHEX comes out on top.
