What Does a Toyota Extended Warranty Cost?

CARCHEX can help you find the best extended warranty that’s both comprehensive and affordable. In fact, the average monthly coverage cost of a CARCHEX Vehicle Protection Plan for a 2007–2014 Toyota is just $56.*

Keep reading to learn how much a Toyota extended warranty costs, what’s covered in different levels of plans, the difference between third-party and dealer warranties, and what questions to ask when getting an extended warranty.

Toyota Extended Warranties 2018

When your Toyota factory warranty expires, you will likely be eligible for extended protection in the form of an extended warranty from the Toyota dealer. These plans (also known as Vehicle Services Agreements) are sold by Toyota and include the following:

  • Three levels of protection to choose from: Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain
  • Access to Toyota’s nationwide service and support network
  • Flexible coverage terms that last 3 to 10 years or 50,000 to 125,000 miles, whichever comes first
  • 24/7 roadside assistance and travel protection
  • A one-time warranty transfer (in the event that you sell the car)
  • Cancellation options

Toyota’s Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain Vehicle Service Agreements all offer extended dealer-provided coverage for after your factory warranty expires. Read on for more about what each extended warranty offered by Toyota covers as of 2018.

Toyota Platinum Protection

The highest level of protection available from Toyota, the Platinum Protection plan can last as short as 3 years or 50,000 miles, or as long as 10 years or 125,000 miles, and covers many parts that the Gold and Powertrain plans do not.

Toyota Gold Protection

This mid-level protection plan offered by Toyota can run from 3 years or 50,000 miles to 8 years or 125,000 miles, but has many component exclusions in coverage.

Toyota Gold Protection Exclusion Examples:

  • Air conditioning heater box assembly
  • Brake pedal subassembly
  • Airbags, airbag sensors, front seat airbag assembly
  • Navigation system
  • Steering sensor
  • Thermostat
  • Ignition switch lock cylinder and key set
  • Fuel filler opening lid hinge spring
  • Oil pressure receiver gauge and sending unit
  • Rear shock absorber control actuator
  • Sunroof cables
  • Speedometer
  • Spark plug resistive cord
  • Air control valve (ACV) and air pump
  • Catalytic converter
  • Manual transmission parts (see Powertrain Protection plan)

Toyota Powertrain Protection

Powertrain Protection offered by Toyota lasts for 6 years or 100,000 miles, and covers the essentials like the engine, transmission, and axle-assembly, as well as a handful of other parts related to hybrid and/or alternative fuel Toyotas.

These “bonus” covered parts, in addition to the usual powertrain component coverage, are:

  • Actuator assembly shift control
  • Hybrid vehicle generator assembly
  • Hybrid vehicle motor assembly
  • Hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly
  • Transmission input damper assembly

That said, there are a lot of excluded repairs from this plan, which is standard for a powertrain warranty.

Some of the notable excluded parts are:

  • Catalytic converter
  • Exhaust gas recirculation valve, exhaust manifolds, and exhaust manifold meat insulator
  • Mixture control valve
  • Oil cooler and oil filter bracket subassembly
  • Vacuum switch/vacuum switching valve/vacuum transmitting valve (covered by Platinum)
  • Shift lever knob (covered by Gold and Platinum)
  • Clutch pedal subassembly
  • Control position indicator subassembly
  • Master cylinder reservoir (covered by Platinum)
  • Radial ball bearing (for clutch release) and/or clutch fork
  • Shift lever boot and/or retainer, shift lever knob (covered by Gold and Platinum)

Toyota Warranties for Used Cars

As of 2018, Toyota offers similar levels of coverage for used cars as it does for new cars, with the same component exclusions each for Powertrain, Gold, and Platinum plans, but there are eligibility variations.

Used Toyotas younger than 9 years old with less than 150,000 miles are eligible for Platinum and Gold coverage, and the plans may only be purchased at the time of vehicle sale.

Powertrain protection is available for models younger than 12 years old with less than 150,000 miles, and also must be purchased at the time of vehicle sale.

Certified Used Vehicles from Toyota are eligible for the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle VSA, as long as they have a Toyota Certified Vehicle Limited Powertrain Warranty and their CUV is within six years old and has less than 85,000 miles on it.

Note: these protection plans should not be confused with factory warranties, which cover your car up until a certain mileage or year owned. 2018 Toyotas come with bumper-to-bumper coverage that lasts for 3 years or 36,000 miles, and powertrain coverage lasts for 5 years or 60,000 miles. An extended warranty is designed to kick in after these warranties expire.

Did you know that manufacturer protection plans aren’t your only option for getting an extended warranty on your Toyota? Third-party providers can offer all the benefits of a Toyota extended warranty but with more flexibility. For a free quote from CARCHEX, call 866-261-3457.

Should I Buy an Extended Warranty for a Used Toyota?

Here’s why you should buy extended vehicle protection for a used Toyota:

Toyotas tend to be reliable.

This 2017 list of the 25 most reliable cars for high mileage includes the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Camry, Toyota Prius, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota RAV4, and Toyota Avalon. That’s 8 out of 25 cars, or roughly 32% of the list. Chances are, your Toyota will last you for years to come.

Keeping a car alive past 100,000 miles often requires expensive maintenance.

Even with a great track record for lifespan, car parts like belts, fluids, spark plugs, and water pumps tend to need to be replaced, and can lead to bigger, more expensive repair costs down the road. An extended warranty can offset these expenses.

Even the best Toyotas have predictable issues.

Take these reliability favorites from the previous example, and check on reported issues from RepairPal.com:

  • Toyota Corolla
  • Toyota Highlander
    • Common problem: Failed oxygen sensor
    • Average Repair Cost: $817–$1799.
  • Toyota Tacoma
    • Common problem: Lower ball joint issue
    • Average Repair Cost: $223–$519.

To determine whether the cost of a Toyota extended warranty is worth it to you, you’ll want to weigh the extended warranty quote you receive against:

  • Your car’s history of repairs so far
  • Commonly needed repairs for your car
  • Your car’s planned amount of mileage (i.e. how long you plan to drive it)

If you tend to change cars every few years, an extended warranty can still make sense for you, especially if the car already has problematic components that are expensive to fix. If you’re planning to see your car through to the 100,000 mile mark (or beyond), a protection plan could be a smart investment. In addition, most extended warranties are transferable, so you can increase the value of your car, should you decide to sell it.

Dealer vs. Third-Party Toyota Extended Warranties

Most people think of going to the place they bought their car first to get an extended warranty. But buying from a dealer usually restricts you in three ways:

  1. Auto dealers sell off-the-rack extended warranties that cannot be customized for coverage or cost.
  2. Most auto dealers will require that you visit a specific licensed dealership for repairs in order to receive coverage.
  3. Often times, dealer warranties will be rolled into your monthly car payment. Though this does make it easy for you by keeping costs to a single payment, it typically means that you’re actually paying interest on your warranty.

The good news is, buying vehicle protection plans from a third-party company like CARCHEX can solve these problems.

  1. A good extended warranty company will work with you to ensure that you get the best coverage at an affordable cost.
  2. Unlike auto dealers, the best third-party providers will have much more flexible terms of service, allowing you to choose a mechanic you trust for your car repairs.
  3. Buying from a third-party company also means that your payment is separate from your car payment, so you’re not racking up interest.

What Determines the Cost of a Toyota Extended Warranty?

Here are some factors that go into determining the cost of an extended warranty on a Toyota:

  • The type of coverage you need—Prices may vary based on the protection level and length of coverage.
  • The model and age of your vehicle—Is the car in good shape? Is it prone to need repairs? Have you taken good care of the car?
  • Whether there is a deductible—If there is a deductible, your premium will be lower.
  • Extra benefits—Extra perks and bonuses can drive up the price in some cases.
  • Whether you’re still covered by a manufacturer’s warranty–Purchasing an extended warranty before your factory warranty expires can save you money on your new plan.
  • Your warranty provider—Third-party warranty providers offer lower prices than auto dealers do.
  • Whether or not the warranty is “thrown in” with the purchase of your car—If the financing for the vehicle cost includes the warranty, you may be paying interest on it.

Perhaps the most important factor that affects the cost of a Toyota extended warranty is the provider. Make sure you choose a warranty company that is willing and ready to work with you to find the most comprehensive and affordable plan.

Is a Toyota Extended Warranty Worth It?

If you’re no longer covered by your factory warranty, then you’re responsible for paying out of pocket for any repairs or replacements that your car needs.

Even if you still have your Toyota warranty, don’t wait until your coverage expires before getting extra protection on your vehicle.

Though Toyotas are known for their reliability and low maintenance cost, all vehicles require more attention and money as they age. When those needs come up, are you prepared to foot the bill?

Here are a few repairs commonly reported by Toyota drivers:

  • Catalytic Converter Replacement — $357 to $1002
  • AC Condenser Replacement — $582 to $1385
  • Wheel Bearing Replacement (Rear) — $334 to $477
  • Coolant Reservoir Replacement — $89 to $123
  • Heater Blower Motor Replacement — $267 to $307
  • Brake Shoe Replacement — $209 to $307
  • Strut Replacement (Rear) — $204 to $276
