Volkswagen Extended Warranty

When you bought your Volkswagen, you did your research and went to the VW dealership armed with the necessary knowledge to secure a car. The search for a Volkswagen extended warranty should be no different. You should fully understand what your options are from the dealership as well as from third-party warranty providers.

The car warranty experts at CARCHEX can help you understand what’s covered in a VW extended warranty and find the best coverage plan for you.

What Is Covered by My Volkswagen Factory Warranty?

When you drive your new Volkswagen off the lot, you’re covered by a basic manufacturer’s warranty. However, the coverage has changed over the past few years.

2018 and 2019 Volkswagen Warranties

Most 2018 and 2019 models are covered by what Volkswagen called The People First Warranty, or a New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This bumper-to-bumper, transferable warranty lasts six years or 72,000 miles, whichever comes first.

This warranty provides limited coverage of your powertrain, battery, brake pads and shoes, wheel alignment, paint, wiper blades, and mechanical adjustments (parts must be supplied by Volkswagen). However, maintenance services, tire issues, and some types of corrosion aren’t included.

Before 2018, many Volkswagen models were covered for only three years or 36,000 miles.

2020 Volkswagen Warranties

While a six-year, 72,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty is longer than most manufacturer warranties, the 2020 VW warranty dropped to four year or 50,000 miles. Instead of the extra two years of warranty coverage, the manufacturer now provides two free years of maintenance.

In addition to the four-year, 50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, 2020 Volkswagen warranties include:

  • Limited Warranty Against Corrosion Perforation (7 years/100,000 miles)
  • Federal Emissions Warranties (2 years/24,000 miles or 8 years/80,000 miles)
  • Limited warranties of varying lengths for batteries, key fob batteries, brake pads/shoes, bulbs, paint, wheel alignment, tire balance, wiper blades, mechanical adjustments, and wear and tear coverage for brake pads, shoes, brake discs and drums, and wiper blades

VW Extended Warranty Coverage

The Volkswagen dealership offers extended warranties called Vehicle Service Protection Plans. For up to 10 years or 150,000 miles, these plans cover the mechanical repairs, including parts and labor.

The options for coverage are:

  • Powertrain—Engine, transmission, drive axle, hybrid/electric
  • Gold—Powertrain coverage plus climate control, shocks, front and rear suspensions, fuel system, and electrical system
  • Platinum—Gold coverage plus steering, brakes, CV boots, navigation, audio, and high-tech

The plans—part of the Volkswagen Drive Easy Program—also include additional benefits like roadside assistance, but there are limits for each perk. For example, you’ll only be reimbursed $100 for towing to the nearest Volkswagen-approved repair shop.

The Volkswagen extended warranty doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions and mechanical breakdowns caused by lack of maintenance, accidents, weather-related issues, or vandalism.

While VW extended warranties are transferable, there is a transfer fee of $50.

A Volkswagen extended warranty on used car (Certified Pre-Owned Service Protection) provides similar coverage.

What Does a VW Extended Warranty Cost?

If you decide to purchase extended coverage from the Volkswagen dealership, you select one of the coverage levels above and pay a deductible instead of repair costs. The options for deductibles are $0, $100 disappearing (waived if the repairs are made at the selling dealership), $100, or $250 per visit. If you are part of the CPO Service Protection program, your deductible is $50 per visit.

When shopping, keep in mind that the average cost per month for a CARCHEX Vehicle Protection Plan for a 2007–2014 Volkswagen is only $68.* The dealership’s VW extended warranty prices may be higher, and your options may be limited. With CARCHEX, you don’t have to pay a deductible per visit, either—just an affordable monthly payment.

Is a Volkswagen Extended Warranty Worth It?

When your factory warranty ends, how will you cover the cost of repairs? Like most Volkswagen drivers, you want to ensure the reliability and longevity of your vehicle. You also want the peace of mind that you won’t have to shell out for an unexpected expensive repair.

Damaged company transparency has not done much to boost the confidence of VW drivers—and the terms of the company’s warranty plans have been difficult to decipher among consumers. Additionally, most Volkswagens are expected to expensive experience problems with their transmissions, power windows, and headlights, according to RepairPal.

To make matters worse, VW owners are expected to pay nearly $8,000 for repairs over the first 10 years of the car’s life, according to a research done by YourMechanic.

Can You Afford to Repair Your Volkswagen?

The longer you have your Volkswagen, the more likely it is that you will have to pay for an expensive repair. Consider these common repairs and their costs (via RepairPal).

  • The cost to replace the clutch on an average Volkswagen can range between $573 and $2,239.
  • Replacing the alternator can cost between $577 and $800.
  • The annual maintenance cost of a Volkswagen vehicle is $694.

Keep in mind that VW factory warranties cover the cost of repairs only if you have your car serviced at a specific licensed Volkswagen dealership and only if the part that needs repairs is the original VW part. If you’re not close to a dealership, you may not be able to ensure you get the service you need.

An extended Volkswagen warranty will help cover your vehicle and save you time and money on repairs. Don’t pay for repairs out of pocket—protect yourself with an extended warranty.

How Do I Get the Best Deal on a Volkswagen Extended Warranty?

To make sure you find the best warranty plan for your vehicle, there are some key factors to consider:

  • Buy from Third-Party Warranty Providers
    • Car dealerships often markup the price of an extended warranty or will roll it into your car payment, causing you to pay interest on the price of the warranty.
    • Third-party warranty providers generally offer the most affordable warranty coverage because they work independently of vehicle manufacturers.
    • Most third-party providers don’t require that you visit a certain repair shop, so you can use your trusted local mechanic.
    • Remember that you don’t have to buy a dealership warranty on the spot.
  • Purchase an Extended Warranty Before Your Factory Warranty Expires
    • One solid method of lowering the cost of your protection plan is to buy an extended warranty before your current factory warranty expires.
  • Do Your Research
    • Performing research on different warranty provider options can help you save on your protection plan. Look for companies that offer competitive warranty pricing with affordable and flexible payment plans. Several third-party review sites have conducted reviews of the best auto warranty providers to help with your search. We’ve done our research, too, and this is what we’ve found.

8 Tips for Buying an Extended Warranty for Your VW

With so many companies offering vehicle service contracts, the trick is to find a company that is reputable and offers the VW extended warranty coverage you want.

Here are the top eight features to look for in the terms and conditions (and fine print) of your vehicle service contract:

  1. Your plan should cover both mechanical failures as well as “wear and tear” repairs.
  2. Make sure the contract takes effect when you buy the warranty, not when you bought the car.
  3. Your extended warranty should come with a 100% money-back guarantee effective for 30 or 60 days.
  4. Look for plans with no deductible or at least deductibles charged only per eligible repair visit.
  5. A good extended warranty will cover the costs of towing, a rental car, meals, and lodging if your car breaks down far from home.
  6. Avoid plans that only cover eligible repairs done at the dealer of purchase or at the same brand dealership.
  7. Your warranty should pay the repair shop directly. Don’t agree to pay up front and wait for reimbursement.
  8. The best extended warranty companies are backed up by reputable industry leaders.
